Calcined petroleum coke is an essential ingredient in the production of aluminum. It is produced by placing high quality raw “green” petroleum coke into rotary kilns. In the rotary kilns, it is heated to temperatures between 1200 to 1350 degrees C (2192 to 2460 F). The high temperatures eliminate the excess moisture, remove all remaining hydrocarbons, and alter the crystalline structure of the coke, which gives a denser, more electrically conductive product. Calcined petroleum coke is then cooled and transported to storage silos or into trucks, barges, vessels or containers. The structure of calcined petroleum coke is sponge-like, which is beneficial in making of anodes. Almost 0.4 tons of calcined petroleum coke is used for every ton of anode manufacturing.  There is no other substitute available commercially, which is viable for the calcined pet coke in the production of aluminum anodes.

There are four basic types of calcined petroleum coke in the global market. Needle coke, shot coke, sponge coke, and honeycomb coke. Needle coke is also known as acicular coke. It is highly crystalline petroleum coke used in the manufacturing of electrodes for the steel and aluminum industries. Honeycomb coke is an intermediate coke. It has ellipsoidal pores that are uniformly distributed. Honeycomb coke has a lower electrical conductivity compared to needle coke. Majority of calcined petroleum coke is used in the aluminum industry and steel industry. Calcined petroleum coke is significantly used for melting purpose of alumina in the aluminum industry. In the steel industry, calcined petroleum coke is used as recarburizing agent. Other uses include titanium dioxide, which is used as pigment for plastics, paints and food coloring.  Calcined petroleum coke is also used as conductive backfill in-ground electrode station.
