The cornea is the transparent outer layer at the front of the eyeball. It acts as a window to the eye. The colored iris and the pupil (the black dot in the center of the iris) can be seen through the cornea. The cornea helps focus light rays on the retina (the light-sensitive film at the back of the eye). This image is then transmitted to the brain.
When the cornea is damaged, it can become less transparent or its shape can change. This can prevent light from reaching the retina and cause the image signals transmitted to the brain to become distorted or unclear.
A cornea transplant is often referred to as keratoplasty or a corneal graft. It is performed to improve sight, relieve pain and to treat severe infection or damage. Corneal implants are optical devices that are inserted into the cornea to correct decreased near vision in people with presbyopia and reduce the need for reading glasses.
These devices have also been used for the correction of hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism. Commercially available implantable corneal devices include Kamra Inlay, The Presbia Flexivue Microlens, Raindrop near Vision Inlay, and Icolens.

Market Dynamics:
Drivers for the Global Corneal Implantable Devices Market
Ophthalmic disorders such as glaucoma, scleritis, and Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) are fueling the demand for implantable corneal devices. A sedentary lifestyle, which can result in diabetes, and eye fatigue due to long hours of computer work are the reasons for “dry eye” and diabetic retinopathy.
A cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness and accounts for approximately 51% of blindness in the world. Geriatric populations are most commonly affected by cataracts, and this element is expected to further complement the economic growth of this market.
Advances in the biocompatible materials used for corneal implants provide additional benefits to patients with presbyopia. Therefore, an increase in ophthalmic disorders is also a major factor driving the revenue growth of this target market.
Opportunities for the Global Corneal Implantable Devices Market
The increasing prevalence of diabetes and other eye-related disorders in various countries with a growing geriatric population demographic, whose individuals are more susceptible to developing these disorders are expected to contribute to the revenue growth of this market. Lifestyle changes and increased screen usage are expected to create immense growth opportunities in the corneal implantable devices market
Restraints for the Global Corneal Implantable Devices Market
There are various potential side-effects or damages associated with the use of corneal implants such as the losing of one’s vision, develop debilitating visual symptoms, retinal detachment, etc. Moreover, a lack of skilled professionals to perform implantation procedures is hampering the economic growth of the corneal implantable devices market over the forecast period.
