Market Dynamics
A greater level of awareness concerning healthier living has led to an increase in the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, which has increased significantly over the last few decades. Therefore, the spike in interest levels concerning these exotic fruits on account of them being high in nutritional value and are not usually found in a given region, such as in the case of noni and mangosteen.
Several tropical fruits have excellent health benefits due to the phytochemical components they possess. Several factors have contributed to the increase in the import of some of these fruits and vegetables such as, the diversification of populations, increased tourism levels in areas that produce these types of fruit, improved postharvest handling systems and technologies such as cold-chain techniques, improved packaging methods, modified and controlled atmosphere when being transported, better quarantine systems, minimal processing, etc. Factors such as these have led to an increase in the interest for diverse fruits and vegetables.
Some of the discrepancies that have contributed to the slow introduction of these exotic fruits to various markets in both developed and developing countries include, certain fruits being of tropical origin and therefore are sensitive to refrigeration and are usually characterized by a concise shelf life; many tend to be infested by pests such as fruit flies, etc.
Consequently, they are generally required to comply with respective customs regulations before they are shipping to certain markets, etc. A few years ago, the marine shipping of perishable goods was not very common. Air transport has been relatively expensive to justify whether or not the shipping of these goods were a viable solution or not.
