IVUS is a non-invasive medical imaging technique used to diagnose and treat vascular diseases. IVUS uses ultrasound technology, which sends high-frequency sound waves through the body. Echoes are recorded by using a series of elements representing different time periods for an echo to return from a patient’s body or any obstructions along the way.
The echoes are then used to reconstruct a real-time image of the inside of the blood vessels, including any plaque buildup or blockages in these vessels. IVUS offers high resolution images that allow physicians to take measurements and perform procedures without making an incision in the skin through which they can see directly into a vessel.

Market Dynamics:
Drivers for the Global Intravascular Ultrasound [IVUS] Devices Market
Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) imaging has become a significant imaging modality for the efficient diagnosis and cure of cardiovascular ailments over the past ten years, empowered by innovative uses of piezoelectric transducer technology. Restrictions on the production and performance of identical piezoelectric transducers have also hampered the enhancement of IVUS for increasingly clinically meaningful uses, such as forward viewing matrices for leading interventions and high-resolution imaging of arterial structures such as vulnerable plaque and fibrous cap, as well as the application of techniques such as the harmonic image of tissue and contrast agents.
Micromachined Capacitive Ultrasonic Transducer (CMUT) technology demonstrates great potential to transform the IVUS not only to meet these clinical needs, but also to unlock the potential for low-cost imaging devices combined with therapeutic tools. Manufacturing techniques with a maximum process temperature of 250°C have been established to build CMUTs on the same silicon chip with combined electronic components. Using these techniques, the CMUT arrays were properly assembled to forward the IVUS display in the 10-20 MHz range.
These array elements were presented in terms of pulse-echo response, radiation pattern measurements, and showed their volumetric imaging potentialities at different imaging targets. Therefore, the increased application of Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducer (CMUT) Technology is expected to fuel the economic growth of the intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) device market.
Restraints for the Global Intravascular Ultrasound [IVUS] Devices Market
The main limitations of intravascular ultrasound that is commonly used in a cardiac catheterization laboratory are its cost, the increase in the time of the technique, and the fact that it is considered an interventional technique and must be performed using angiography. In addition, there may be additional dangers imposed by the IVUS catheter application.
IVUS brings considerable additional exploration time and some elevated risks to the patient beyond the performance of a standard diagnostic angiographic examination. This reinforcement is considerably less when the IVUS is part of a percutaneous coronary intervention, since much of the setup is identical for the intervention and for IVUS imaging. These issues are slated to further hamper the revenue growth of the intravascular ultrasound device market.
