Lettuce Leaf Basil Market Introduction:
Lettuce leaf basil (Ocimum basilicum crispum), a rare herb also known as large-leafed Italian, large leaf basil, or crispum basil, is a variety of basil. ‘Lettuce Leaf’ originated in Japan and has a large leaf size, as its name suggests. While this variety of basil has larger leaves, it doesn’t taste the same as the Genovese variety. Instead, it has a sweet basil flavor. A welcomed addition to salads and is excellent when used in pesto and herbal oils. Its leaves are approximately 5 inches in length, i.e., 12.5 cm long, and the plant grows to 61 cm in height. The appearance of these leaves is similar to that of a leaf of lettuce. These leaves are highly aromatic but are not quite as strong as other forms of basil and have been portrayed as possessing a clove and minty taste or, on the other hand, a gently spicy, peppery taste.
These herbs prefer warmer temperatures of around 25 to 30°C and can grow indoors and outdoors.

Market Dynamics:
Lettuce leaf basil is widely used in salads, sandwiches, pizza, and other dishes as an alternative to pepper, paprika, oregano, and other herbs due to its health benefits as it possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and anti-bacterial properties. Adding to this, increasing awareness levels concerning the benefits of vegan diets, the demand for fresh ingredients, and the increasing use of this herb in several cuisines are expected to augment this market further.
This herb needs fertile and moist soil to grow along with optimum weather conditions. Excessive consumption of this herb may lower blood sugar levels in some individuals. These elements could negatively influence the economic growth of this market.
However, the excellent nutritious properties of this herb allow for it to be used in dietary supplements, as these leaves also help to reduce stress and depression and increase mental awareness. This anticipated increase in demand is expected to create high revenue opportunities for players in this target market.
