Vitamin D Home Testing Market Introduction:
Vitamin D refers to a group of naturally occurring fat-soluble vitamins chemically related to steroids, which help in the absorption of calcium, magnesium, phosphate, zinc, etc. Vitamin D helps to maintain the cell cycle, reduce chances of neuromuscular disorder and inflammation in joints, as well as enhance immune function. It maintains serum calcium and phosphate concentrations to regularize the mineralization of bone and teeth to prevent hypocalcemic tetany. Vitamin D is of two types; Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3.
Vitamin D2 comes from plants and yeast, while vitamin D3 is sourced from animals. Vitamin D3 is produced by the human body when exposed to the sun. Certain foods that are highly rich in vitamin D include plant-extracted milk, dairy, orange juice, and cereals.
Yeast and mushrooms are also other food items that contain levels of vitamin D2. According to the NIH (National Health Institute), half a cup of white mushrooms contains 46% of daily vitamin D levels recommended for an adult. Foods that contain vitamin D3 are cod liver oil, salmon, trout, sardines, tuna, egg, and cheese.
One tablespoon of cod liver oil contains 170% of vitamin D required by an adult. 3 oz. of cooked salmon contains 71% of daily vitamin D requirements. Similarly, 3 oz. of trout contains 81% of daily vitamin D required by an adult.

Market Dynamics–
Booming geriatric populations, the increasing prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, as well as the development of various chronic diseases around the world are major factors fueling this market. Awareness concerning the benefits of regular health check-ups, coupled with higher per capita incomes are other factors complementing this market as well. However, the increasing costs being borne by patients is a primary factor that could hamper the market growth trajectory of this industry.
Individuals are not well informed about their daily recommended consumption levels of vitamin D. This coupled with the substandard levels of healthcare infrastructure across several countries may restrict the financial growth of the Vitamin D home testing market. Optimum levels of vitamin D may reduce the threat to the health of individuals and prevent bone fractures, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, cardiovascular diseases, etc. This is anticipated to act as an opportunity for additional growth, as more routine testing will enable in maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D required by the average individual.
